Bee Propolis

Although most of the following articles are human related they definitely can apply to animal recovery as well as all the traditional active ingredients of veterinary medication derive from human medicine anyway.

What is Propolis?

Propolis has been around for over 45 million years and has been used as a healing agent since early civilisation. Today, there is mounting evidence that Propolis may stimulate and support healthy immune function.  A healthy immune system means greater resistance and better defence against infection, illness and disease.

Propolis is a natural substance collected by bees from the buds of certain trees. Bees mix the resinous material with salivary secretions and wax and use it to sterilize the hive entrance. Inside the hive, the Propolis is used to prepare a clean and safe place for the queen bee to lay her eggs and to protect the hive internally from bacterial and viral infection. (read more)

Bee Propolis, also called “bee glue,” is a resinous, gummy substance that bees combine with wax to construct and maintain their hives. In laboratory tests, bee propolis has exhibited a variety of interesting antimicrobial and anti-tumor properties.

Health Benefits Of Bee Propolis

One of the problems with alternative medicines is that while there are many claims as to their benefits, there is sometime very little real hard evidence the the various extracts and supplements actually do what they say. Questions such as “Is bee propolis good for you?” should be given serious consideration before being answered.

So I have done a little looking around at what reseach has been done into this area and what hard evidence there is of propolis health benefits. So in this article I will discuss some of the more reputable research which has been published and is available on the internet. (read more)

Bee Propolis Benefits To The Immune System

The immune system plays a critical role in sustaining health and vitality. A healthy immune system protects us from disease and infection and is key when considering longevity or “anti aging” – propolis may help boost the immune system, lets take a look at how and why through an indepth review of propolis extract benefits.
Various natural ingredients purport to provide aid to a healthy immune system, one of these is nature’s own propolis. The key to understanding the role of the immune system can be researched fully from the many medical studies which have been conducted, most of which are available to you online. It is important to know that as we age, approaching our mid thirties and beyond, the immune system weakens. The weakening immunity which our body provides can make us more susceptible to contracting illnesses, many of which can develop into serious and life threatening conditions, such as cancer. Bee Propolis Stops Tumors from Neurofibromatosis and Cancer

Wednesday, April 29, 2009 by: Barbara L. Minton
(NaturalNews) Honeybees are some of the most amazing creatures ever created by nature. They play a vital role in much of the food supply through pollination, and they provide people with a healthy natural alternative to sugar. Some of the most interesting aspects of bees are the substances they make to use themselves. Propolis is a natural resin found in young tree buds. Bees collect it for use as a glue to seal their homes. Propolis is an exceedingly complex product that contains substances that prevent and treat diseases ranging from cancer to the common cold. Recent research has documented the ability of propolis to suppress the growth of human tumors from neurofibromatosis and cancer.

Compound from propolis halts tumor process in clinical trials

Neurofibromatosis is a genetic disorder that can produce coffee colored skin patches, but it is best known for producing tumors on nerve tissue including the nerves involved in hearing. Tumors from neurofibromatosis can grow anywhere else in the body including the brain and spinal cord, and if surgically removed, they can return. The condition of neurofibromatosis can be life threatening. (read more)

Bee Propolis: Nature’s Healing Balm with Immune Boosting Properties

By Katherine East, Natural News, 6/16/2008
Bee propolis is a remarkable natural substance collected and produced by honeybees. It is often referred to as a natural antibiotic and has many diverse uses. I love it when nature clearly has the upper hand over the frailty of our human science. Bee propolis is one such substance and has even been described as having anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and even anti-cancer properties with immune modulating effects. These may sound a little too good to be true but you can’t go wrong with a bottle of bee propolis in your medicine cabinet. As a natural remedy it will be incredibly useful for at least it’s anti-viral effects. (continue to read here

Veterinary Applications

The bee product also offers some benefits to breeders by improving livestock weight gain and reduce diarrhea in their animals.

A study done in 1987 showed that 5 ml of propolis solution given to milk-fed calves helped achieve the above results.

Studies done on rabbits have also showed that the bee substance also helped treat coccidiosis, eimeria and mastitis. (read more)

Propolis treatment for Trichomoniasis and Candida sypmtoms

Propolis has strong anti-fungal, anti-inflammation and anti-protozoan effect and has been proven effective in cases of STDs like trich and candida. Trichomoniasis or trich is a curable sexually transmitted disease (STD) and a common cause of vaginitis. It is caused by Trichomonas vaginalis, a protozoan parazite. It is basically an urogenital tract infection which can lead to cervicitis (cervix inflammation), vaginitis (vagina infection) or urethritis (urethra infexion). Trichomoniasis symptoms are most common in women (foul-smelling, itchy and yellow-green or grey vaginal discharge), but also appear in men (irritation, burning after urination). Even if the symptoms are obvious just in one partner, both of them should get treatment. Even if the person is not showing any symptoms, he or she can still pass the infection to her or his sexual partner. Trichomoniasis can cause cervical cancer, prostate cancer and premature birth. The baby of a mother with trichomoniasis usually has low birth weight too.

Candida is caused by fungus Candida Albicans and is usually shown in symptoms like genital itchiness, thicker consistency of the vaginal discretion (white), burning sensation while urinating, pain during sex.

Trich is commonly treated with antibiotics like Flagyl (metronidazole or tinidazole), but if you wish to try with a natural remedy, go for medicinal plants and propolis: Propolis has a strong anti-protozoan and anti-fungal effect and can help treat conditions like trich and candida. In the evening, perform a vaginal wash with tea, made from medicinal plants (we suggest calendula, fern root stalk, tansy and the antiparasitic and antifungal wormwood). After the wash, use propolis ovules, but insert them right before going to bed, so propolis can work during the night. Researches have shown that propolis has 100% lethal effect on Trichomonas and it also helps decrease inflammations connected to vaginitis. (quoted from here)
