Why do you hate us?

Diary, 4/19/08

I am so sad. Many people hate us and I do not understand why. They call us “flying rats”, they call us “vermin”. This is so unjust. They really don’t know that much about us and even the scientists do not really know us that well just because we are everywhere a common sight and nothing exotic. This is so unfair.

F.e. scientists still do not know why we create so many different morphs (ha – that’s the name for the colours of our feathers) which can be extremely beautiful – especially when the sun is shining and are reflecting the metallic shimmer of our neck feathers (hackle) then. My father f.e. is a “pied white flight” because he has white feathers on his wings and you can recognize him easily from the distance. My mother is a “blue bar” which is quite common I think. Btw – since I know these things I will watch much more carefully what’s flying here in the neighbourhood. The more I know – the more interesting this gets. And I really recommend to check out the links on the sidebar about us pigeons!

Pigeons are far from being vermin. There are so many fairy tales about us which need to be binned. Scientific researches in the city have shown that the prejudice of pigeons spreading diseases to the human body is drop dead nonsense. They are no greater danger than any other wild bird. The fairy tale that pigeons are infectious with salmonella is nonsense too – you are not going to eat us or bath in our dropping – do you? Even the dangerous bird flu virus is not an issue – most city pigeons are quite immune against bird flu infection.

Imagine there are no more wild animals in the city, no birds, no dogs, no cats or any other living being. How sad would this be? We pigeons are nothing exotic, but we are beautiful – look at our feathers in the sun. We are cooing – yes – and thus we sometimes wake up the humans – at least those who possess only a balcony but what is really so terrible about that?

Each one of us has a different personality and despite that we do not fight against each other. We are the symbol of peace – everybody knows this! Read the facts about us and really look at us and how we behave. Maybe this will start to take your prejudice away…

My landlady cleans the nest every day – so WE DO NOT STINK! In fact we do hardly smell. We try to be as clean ourselves as possible. F.e. when we have to make our poo we turn our body end towards the border of the big flowerpot so that we stay clean and do not sit in our own poo. Mommy and Daddy did not make a single piece of poo on the whole balcony during the first week not to speak on the nest in order to keep us clean and healthy. This is really true. Our landlords were very surprised.

Honestly – our poo is not half as bad as what the humans produce. Shall I really start to talk about all that chemical waste and pollution and everything else they are spreading in the whole world and which destroys so many habitats including their own? No – let’s not start with this now.

Our parents are very good parents and take care for us very thoroughly. Do humans do that with their own kids? Hmmm – I doubt it. Although Mommy and Daddy stay away for a longer time now they come back several times during the day and feed us. And Mommy is still staying with the whole night to keep us warm and to protect us. Yesterday she even threw a wobbler when the landlady came out on the balcony. It was dark already and possible my Mommy did not recognize her or she got a little shock – I don’t know but she started to ruffle up her feathers and was ready to fight. Hm – completely unnecessary – but this happens. Normally she knows very well that no-one does us any harm here.

The only thing I do not like is that every day another male pigeon appears on the balcony – he is totally black. Although he is a beautiful guy I do not like how Mommy is cooing with him. In my opinion she is much too friendly with him. What does he want from her???

Another foreign pigeon appeared today but Mommy chased him away immediately. She does not want any more foreigner near the nest. I am content!

Photos tomorrow again…see ya winken - Neu!
