From the

Diary as of 4/20/ – 4/21/09

I had to change the breakfast routine! Instead of putting the flowerpot saucers on the balcony floor I am feeding now from hand. The point was that on some mornings I had more than 20 pigeons on the balcony coming for feeding. This was not my plan and this could not continue if I wanted to be a responsible pigeon lover. Besides leaving all that poop which got a bit too much to clean off, Pete got crazy because he had to chase off too many poachers. I had to stop feeding them all. So I decided, to only feed “our” pigeons, when they appeared, from my hand.

I also did not want to make them dependant on the balcony which would not have been natural. The weather had become better, the temperatures acceptable – so they had to fly to seek their own food. No good if wild birds become dependant on a single source.

What I am now doing is, opening the balcony door and lying on my belly with the seeds in my hand. Nearly without any hesitation Willy and Winnie, Jimi and Joey appeared right at the beginning and picked the seeds out of my hand directly – as if they had never done anything else. I cannot do much about having still the one or other little poacher (foreign pigeons) coming to steal some seeds from my hand but the quantity has reduced dramatically. Apparently they all understand now that the cockaigne is over. Sorry piggies but you are all eating the hair from my head. This is not going to work and I had to make a point.

I am not going to maroon “our”  little pigeon family for you guys! Pete is going beserk otherwise and will end up in the loony bin. I cannot take responsibility for this!

Feeding from hand is such a lovely feeling while you can feel their soft feathers during cramming their little heads into my hand. They eat very fast and you can hear little grunting noises or even squeeking, snuffling, while they cannot breathe so easily eating so fast. It is very funny!

See how this is working:

From the

Diary as of 1/1/ – 1/7/09

We have a new visitor:  Smoky – it’s the smallest pigeon right now – with bronwish feathers on her chest – I assume it’s a girl. In the meanwhile I am quite confident who’s girl and who’s boy. You can watch this from how the older ones – especially Pete is chasing them. He really chases off the boys – to the girls he sometimes turns a blind eye. and of course their behaviour is completely different.

1/2/09 Emma laid a new egg. I am waiting for the second one until I replace them with the plaster eggs again.

1/4/09 Emma laid her second  egg (16 eggs since March 2008)

1/5/09 Willy and Winnie appear together again – apparently it has not worked – their first breeding – either they lost their eggs, or the nest – I cannot say.

1/7/09 It’s -7°C and I discovered that the pigeons use their drinking pot – which is a little plastic bowl with a diameter of about 10 inches – as a bath tub. Wow!!! So I decided to put out their real one – the big green plastic bowl. I put it on the balustrade – and you won’t believe it – but they were queued up to get into the bath.

Some time later I saw Mr. Black with totally frozen feathers on his chest. First I thought he was dirty again, covered with poop as he was during the last days,  but he must have used the bath and then the feathers froze. Now he looked like a little porcupine – all those feather stuck together and were standin’ off like spines! Looked so funny!!

Apparently this did not do any harm to him because today he looked beautiful and well cleaned as ever.

After the bathing orgy the balustrade was covered with ice and it was fun to watch how the pigeons used it for ” ice scating”. Unfortunately I have no video about this – it was soo funny to watch them slipping on the ice and landing on their little bums. Apparently they had their fun with this and I nearly p….. into my pants laughing.

Flat like a Pancake or a fallen Angel…

From the

Diary as of 8/7/08

I told you – the birds are suffering from the heat as well – a bit – but why do they still rest on the balustrade in full sun instead of seeking a shady place??? Not sure why they do this…

Winnie even spread out his wings at full length when I did not have the camera ready any more – so I don’t have a picture of that behaviour. But he lay flat like a pancake with wide wings – looked strange like a fallen angel…

And Daddy Pete is taking a shower in the rain finally again:

A new SlideShow: Taking a Shower in the Rain

From the

Diary as of 5/23/08

Nothing really new but it was big fun to watch Pete (the father) taking a shower in the rain this week. He was sitting on the edge of the balcony ballustrade and then slowly moving like a Sumo wrestler from one leg to the other, veeeeeery slowly, then spreading his wing and holding it upright – then moving to the other side, spreading the other wing into the air in order to get washed under his “arm pit” – as humans do – and moving to the other side again. This all happened in absolute slow motion. As I said – very funny to watch – especially his expression on his face that was showing total ecstacy and enjoyment.

From the

Diary from 5/17/2008

The kiddos are looking like adults now but their behaviour is still that of baby pigeons. Both can fly perfectly now – showboating from time to time as if to prove their new abilities – especially Joey seems to be the racing pilot of the family. You would not believe what kind of manoeuvres he accomplishes – he does in the air what a rabbit does being chased by a fox – darting sideways in the air. It looks awesome.

Today it was nice warm weather and the whole pigeon family used the water bowl as swimming pool. It was the total chaos. Imagine 4 pigeons together in a bowl that measures no more than a foot!! I have shot so many pictures and still could not decide which ones to throw away.

In the end there was no water left in the bowl…

Here comes a whole bunch of lovely photos – therefore I created a slideshow for you:
